About St. Paul's Chapel

St. Paul's Chapel opened in 1766 as a chapel-of-ease for Trinity Church's growing congregation. It is the only colonial-era church left in Manhattan and the oldest public building in the borough still in continuous use.

It has a habit of surviving. When the Great Fire of 1776 destroyed the first Trinity Church, a bucket brigade carried water up from the Hudson River to the chapel's roof. Thirteen years later, on April 30, 1789, George Washington attended a service here after taking the oath of office, and he kept worshipping at St. Paul's until the capital moved to Philadelphia.

On September 11, 2001, the chapel stood less than 100 yards from the World Trade Center, yet not a single pane of glass broke. For nine months afterward it stayed open day and night for recovery workers who needed food, rest or prayer.

Opened in 1766, St. Paul's is the last church from the colonial period still standing on the island, and it has been in use ever since.

The Little Chapel That Stood

It came through 9/11 without a broken window, then spent nine months as a round-the-clock refuge for rescue and recovery workers.

Objects That Honor the Recovery Effort

Inside you'll see the Iron Memorial Cross, forged from World Trade Center remnants, along with the Memorial Pew and the Cup of Life chalice. The Bell of Hope hangs at the western entrance.

A Churchyard with Revolutionary Roots

The marble Montgomery Monument honors General Richard Montgomery, who died at Quebec in 1775. It's believed to be the first Revolutionary War monument the Continental Congress commissioned.
